This article is published in the February issue of the Instrument and Control Systems Magazine. The editor asked to have a tutorial presented on the purpose of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and the high level applications that are provided by pipeline modeling packages. This paper gives a general discussion of these topics and is designed to provide a base understanding of these systems. "SCADA Offers Enhanced Reliability to Product Transmission Industries" |

The ENTELEC conference is the United States largest conference for SCADA systems. This years conference was held San Antonio, Texas. Of the 42 papers presented at the conference, we were authors and presenters of 3 of the papers. This shows the wide range of experience available at Pipeline Services, including Leak Detection, Operator Training Simulation, SCADA system implementation, Terminal Automation, and the Integration of On-line Pipeline Applications into the SCADA environment. "On-Line Pipeline Simulation: Incorporation of the simulation model into the SCADA environment to increase model acceptance" "High Speed Communications: Implemented for Advanced Pipeline Control and Leak Detection Applications" "Terminal Automation: Mexican National Automation Initiative"

The Pacific Pipeline System is the country's newest Crude Pipeline. It is scheduled to be placed in service in August, 1998, and runs directly through Los Angeles, California. This paper identifies the SCADA system, the Leak Detection system, and the Training Simulator which are being implemented to satisfy the most stringent safety requirements ever imposed on a pipeline system. "Pacific Pipeline, latest in Leak Detection Technology"

The spring operations conference of the American Gas Association is being held in Seattle, Washington. Because of our experience in the field of Pipeline Operator Training Simulation, we were asked by A.G.A. to prepare a presentation on the application of training simulation. The Office of Pipeline Safety's new guideline for Operator Qualification is specifically addressed. This paper has been reviewed by Richard Felder, Associate Director of OPS, and Richard Huriaux, Director of Technology and Regulation at OPS prior to delivery to ensure that it is compliant with the new guidelines. "Operator Qualification: Training Simulation for Local Distribution Companies"

This paper, being delivered in Calgary, Canada, June 7, 1998, is designed to be a treatise on pipeline modeling. The discussion deals with the simplifications and assumptions that have hampered the ability to accurately model pipeline transients, these include, steady state vs. transient, Newtonian vs. Non-Newtonian, single vs. two phase simulation among others. "Requirements of Pipeline Simulation: Accurately Modeling Transient Pipeline Operation"

The Pipeline Simulation Interest Group was held in Tuscon, AZ from Oct. 15-17th, 1997. At this conference 11 technical papers were presented, we authored and presented two of them. These included joint papers with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, the operators of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and CentraGas Manitoba, the sole gas distributor for the province of Manitoba, Canada. "Integrated Simulation and SCADA to Replay Transient Historical Data for a Local Distribution Company" "Two Phase Flow in Pipeline Simulation Slack Line Condition in Trans-Alaska Crude Oil Pipeline"

The ENTELEC '97 conference in New Orleans presented an extremely good forum for this paper. It discusses the implementation of a training simulator with a new SCADA system as the operator interface, instead of the current outdated SCADA system. This allows the operators to become experienced with the new SCADA system prior to its implementation on the pipeline. "Pipeline Training Simulator for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline; Its use in designing a new SCADA system"
As a result of work in the pipeline simulation arena, members of the Abu Dhabi Chapter of the Instrument Society of America requested a presentation of how pipeline simulation can be beneficial to the operation of a pipeline. This included the discussion of training simulation and the integration of simulation into the SCADA environment. "Simulation Technology - Oil and Gas Industry"
Following the ENTELEC '97 Conference, the editor of the Pipeline and Gas Journal requested permission to publish this article in the magazine. It is a rework of the paper presented at ENTELEC. "Training Simulator used to Design New SCADA System"
The paper presented at Chemputers was a rework of the paper presented at the ENTELEC '97 conference. This topic has been extremely well received and is very beneficial to the pipeline industry. "Using a Pipeline Training Simulator to Design and Train on a New SCADA System"
This paper for the PC Report Magazine was designed to highlight the advantages of using computer aided decision support in the business cycle. Specifically the ability to move data from a simulation of a process, through the control system, and into the business application and reporting software. Making the real-time data immediately available through out the business organizations, decreasing decision time and increasing operational efficiency. "Real Time Computer Simulation: Its Role in the Business Information System"
This paper was a presentation of a training simulator delivered to TransGas of the Czech Republic. This training simulator is for a gas transmission pipeline with extensive simulation of the control and logic and compressor yards. This conference has the right title, but turned out to be the wrong forum, this conference focused on GIS systems not on pipeline modeling. "Training Simulator for Compressor Stations"
This paper represents the initial announcement to the SCADA and Pipeline Simulation community of the introduction of a new pipeline simulation product. "Improving Economic Operation and Safety of Pipelines Utilizing Simulation Technology"
